If a desk suddenly started to move across the, you would assume that someone was pushing or pulling it. that something was causing it to move. Motion does not occur without cause, a force is needed to cause a change in an objects motion.

When we study motion we look at two different phenomena, Dynamics and Kinematics.

Dynamics - deals with why objects move, it identifies the cause of movement and uses terms like force. This is where we see Newton's laws applied.

Kinematics - deals with how objects move, it describes their speed, direction and how these change. It uss terms like velocity, acceleration and displacement.
